Thread: Alexia Blackwing

    Alexia Blackwing

Alright, this is a new backer champion and she's not the same old, same old. Here's the idea:

    Name: Alexia Blackwing
    Gender: Female
Race: Angel/Valkyrie possible? If not, then Draconian
Class: Valkyrie (or other similar magic-spear user?

Anyone want to make a background lore pitch?

Formerly a guardian of the Plane of Light, came to the Prime Material Plane to stop the spread of the Unhallowed. Perhaps she had a twin sister who also came with her but was killed. When that happened, she colored her wings black to show her sorrow. I can't think of any other reason an angel/valkyrie would have black wings.

    A harpy?

These are often depicted more like animals... but this one is smarter.
(Angels are a bit overused and one-sided, IMO)

How she fights depends on how you design the character.
If the hands are part of the wings, the creature would look far more natural. (my preference)
When on the ground she would wield a spear in her hands but also use her strong wings to fan up a dust cloud or bat an opponent back.
In the air she would wield the spear with her feet / claws.
While these claws would be weapons in their own right, this harpy is smart. She can see the advantage of poking holes into an opponent that cannot reach her in turn.

If she is a 6-limbed magic creature (like DC's Hawkman) she has all the advantages without any negatives but this is boring.

    As for the lore...

A long-forgotten sorcerer had been experimenting with flying warriors but all that his experiments produced were dangerous flying animals that were as dangerous to his own troops as they were to the enemy.
Unfortunately, his last experiment was a marvelous success. He had created a new breed of harpies where the females were intelligent enough to understand orders. The males were not but the females quickly figured out how to guide and control them.
What the sorcerer had not anticipated was that these harpies would manage to escape and kill him in the process.
These harpies now live in small and scattered tribes and can blend in with packs of regular harpies so that many believe that they are a rumor.

Alexia Blackwing is the daughter of a clan chief and was supposed to get married off as part of an alliance.
While she doesn't object to the alliance or serving her clan, she does object to marrying this dumb brute.
If a sorcerer could make her smart, why couldn't another sorcerer make her supposed-to-be husband smarter?
Only one thing is certain. She has to find a sorcerer.

blackwing could just be a name, she doesn't have to have black wings, and i'd go for a valkyrie over an angel.

+1 to Valkyrie and Blackwing just being a name. Maybe Blackwing is a reference to the shadow she casts on her enemies while flying, and could be the first sign that she is there (and thus is a sign of fear in the hearts of evil). It is rumored that to see that shadow in combat is to be inescapably sentenced to death (unless she's with your army of course).

My feeling on the Valkyrie/Angel question is that 1) Valkyrie are indeed cool, but 2) Angels are already in the game; a PC based on a Summonable sounds kind of awesome, actually. So... what if Valkyrie are a kind of Angel?

    My suggested Lore would be;

Among the many varieties of Angel are the Valkyrie - those who guide the spirits of fallen heroes. They honor acts of valor, of courage, and of loyalty, regardless of the hero's race; more often than not, they find themselves taking spirits from both sides of a battle. This is their purpose and their nature, and they fulfill it without favoritism or remorse. Certainly without caring.

...But once, one among their number broke this rule. She was there to take a Dwarven woman who had been given her death blow defending her family. Hearing her children crying for her not to die, she... listened. And refused to take the spirit. The woman lay in agony for days before help arrived; she was healed, but the experience changed her. She grew bitter, and resentful, and finally took her own life -- a death that did not allow her entry to the hallowed halls to which the Valkyrie should have led her years before.

That Valkyrie was Alexia, and on the day the Dwarven woman died - the day her name, which should have been remembered, was lost - Alexia's wings turned black. She was cast out from the Angels, and sent to walk amongst the mortals. She walks among them still; not Fallen, but cast out. She seeks redemption, of course, but above all she is still an Angel, and so she seeks even more to do good. Above all else, she tries to teach mortals to be the kinds of Heroes she would once have guided.

    Of course they are.
After a battle, the valkyries choose the warriors who are worthy of going on to Valhalla. That is their purpose.

Much later their description changed to female warriors but their original purpose / apparition is more a kind of angel / ghost.

She could just dye her wings black for better night attacks, as white wings that glow with holy power probably make night time ambushes hard.

lintking, i hope you don't mind, i changed your lore pitch a bit to be less on the holy/righteous side of things.

Among the many varieties of Angel are the Valkyrie - those who guide the spirits of fallen heroes. They honor acts of valor, of courage, and of loyalty, regardless of the hero's race; more often than not, they find themselves taking spirits from both sides of a battle. Hearing her children crying for her not to die, she... listened. And refused to take the spirit. The woman lay in agony for days before help arrived; she was healed, but the experience changed her. That Valkyrie was Alexia, and on the day the Orcish woman died - the day her name, which should have been remembered, was lost - Alexia's wings turned black. She was cast out from the Valkyries, and sent to walk amongst the mortals. She walks among them still; not Fallen, but cast out. She seeks redemption, of course, but above all she is still a Valkyrie, and her heart thirsts for honorable battle. She tries to teach mortals to be the kinds of Heroes she would once have guided, preferably by leading the charge in a noble fight.

class: fighter(7)/dwarven defender(3) (7d10+3d12, d12 HP lvl, good BAB, good reflex and will save, gains AC)
    race: valkyrie
    weapon: spear
racial abilities: flying, charge, divine health, divine grace
    class abilities: uncanny dodge
flavor/weapon abilities: first strike, inspire heroics, arms master

i think dwarven defender is a good class for a spear wielder since a spear is generally considered a defensive weapon, a fighter gives lots of feats which can mean plenty of abilities so as to make the race special without messing with balance too much (hopefully, though what works in theory...).

This has prompted some good lore "back and forth". Feel free to keep it up for another day. I plan to tackle her writeup tomorrow.
