It works just fine as long as you're using DOSBox. If you don't want to bother with downloading DOSBox, installing it, and figuring out how to make it work (which is super easy if you can remember the old DOS 5.0 and DOS 6.0 command-line syntax), you could always go to gog.com and buy a copy of Master of Magic for five bucks. They package it with a custom-configured copy of DOSBox so you should just be able to download the installer, double-click on it, and be playing MoM within a couple minutes.
